LYRICS

I read in the liner notes of a Pulp album that Mr Jarvis Cocker didn't think lyrics made much sense without the melody and shouldn't be read independently. Right on sir, I think he's got a point of sorts. But I still check them out all the same. By themselves they can seem a bit bizarre, but give them a decent suit...

So slam on the CDs and click to go, or just ride in here solo - who knows what kind of wave you might catch.

OVERBOARD

DON'T FEEL SO SAD

There's a full moon shining this evening
On a head that's covered low
Through your broken ear of barbed wire
So softly the wind it blows through your window
Your role of fire has left for now
And you've made your own steel bed
There are a thousand dreams still out there
If you can just get one in your head

Don't feel so sad
Don't you feel sad X2
And it will take away the pain
Can't you see our love is blind
Can't you see our love is blue

She's not the only one that's for you
She's beautiful, of course
But there's something around the corner
If you can just forget the loss
There's a fine line out there somewhere
That's going to warm your broken heart
It's a case of getting over there
And there's one place you can start

Don't feel so sad
Don't you feel sad X2
And it will take away the pain
And let it start again
When you mountains come falling
And your lips they shake
When you're out with an old friend

Sad, Don't you feel sad
Sad, Don't you feel sad X2
And it will work out just the same

JUDY GARLAND

I'm out on the floor on the long road home
Scar on my heart that wasn't there before
How come I'm on the list of all the reasons why
All good things they seem to die

Meet me in St Louis was the film
'She's got a heart just like a full moon,' she said
'More like a crescent than a full moon,' I said
'You don't understand, you're a complete fucking fool,' she said

All it was was a quiet night out
I wasn't even wearing my decent suit
Then the hammer came crashing down
And a tribute to Judy Garland
And a tribute to Judy Garland

You don't want to go out here on drugs and disease
You don't want to go out here with your tail between your knees
Love it if you want it and suck it if you do
But don't fade away for Judy Garland
Don't fade away for Judy Garland
Don't you leave here for Judy Garland

All it was was a trip to the cinema
With not a soul around
Then out of the blue a bullet from her
And a tribute to Judy Garland
And a tribute to Judy Garland

Brand new 35 millimetre prints
It makes no sense
Wasn't all that good anyway
Certainly not worth fighting for

BLUE-EYED GIRL

Oh where have you been, my blue-eyed girl
Oh why were you taken from me
For the girl that I married was never the one
I was saving my heart for thee

I waited for you by the babbling brook
I carved your name on the tree
I'm sure I heard you talk
I knew the way that you looked
I knew you were waiting for me

Now you're back with a boy
He's selfish and I'm torn
You've been thrown like a stone out to sea
He's taken what once was born to be mine
Now I'll take him away from thee

Don't you cry, don't you cry
My love for you will never die
Don't you cry, don't you cry
I'm going to take a look in his eye

Love, love me
Love, stay with me
Love, don't go again
Don't you ever leave

You're not sweet, you're not kind
Though I once thought you were
I carried you away with me
I wanted to see what was beyond the brook
Beyond the gates that you clasped around me

You were there in my heart
When I walked a 100 miles on
You were there when I drifted out to sea
But somewhere far, where the green fields are
You faded away from me

Don't you cry, don't you cry
My love for you will never die
Don't you cry, don't you cry
I'll still wipe your tears
I'll still wipe your tears from your eye

Love, love me
Love, stay with me
Love, don't go again
Don't you ever leave
Don't you ever leave

You say that you will
But you don't understand
There's a family here and trumpeters three
They're waiting for you
With a rock in their hand
They're hanging from the rafters for thee

Oh where have you been
My blue-eyed girl
Oh why were you taken from me
For somewhere far, where the green fields are
You were taken away, taken away
I'll keep a lock of your hair
The smell of your breath
Your ring, keep your warmth
And a piece of your green shirt

MOVE ON OVER

The girl she comes on gliding by
I'm the one with r s i
She's like a peach out of reach on a tree in Verona
And, I'm the one who's in a coma
I'm the one who's in the clover
I'm the one who's falling over

It was in a dream in a mean magazine
Was the filthiest book I'd ever seen
Covered there in facts and bent at the shoulder
I'm the one who's falling over
I'm the one who's falling over
I'm the one who's testified

Now I'm so tired,
So fried
Move on over
Move, move on over

She was a seamstress and there was no join
I was trying to be a demon in the congo line
I moved on over, I tried my luck
She looked me over said you're wasting your time
I'm the one who's falling over
And you're the one who's back at mine

Now I'm so tired
So fried
Move on over
Move, move on over
I'm going to steam clean my things and move on over

She's like a dream, could be from this magazine
Makes me stop my carousing, cut back my boozing
Now when the lights go out and I go over
There's a moon out there calls, move on over
Move on over

BURN IN HELL

My independence has taken a crushing blow
Walking through your warm light
I'm two foot of an old time hero
The wild spread of your daddy-friendly rays
And your world chromatic view
Well I'm so sick of sounding like I am
And I'm sorry that I ever met you

And the events of the evening
They're still ringing like a bell
I had no idea I could not refuse
Well, you can just burn in hell

Your queer-cut face, your bad straight hair
And the smell of your room
There's nothing I can't quite clearly see
From your backgammon to your perfume
As if Delilah's taken the knife
And cut my objectionable throat
I can't say I didn't want it, now I've got it
And the damage is all written in the letters you wrote

And I'm trapped in a mind field
Of something I can never tell
One more night, no more excuses
Well, you can just burn in hell

Well we're seconds from take off
All on board
View come-lately, all is designated
We're all friends here
Thank the lord
You don't need excuses
When you're all in bruises
You don't need excuses
When you're overboard

And I'm trapped in a mind field
Of something I can never tell
One more night, no I don't
You can just burn in hell
Burn in hell

FIREHOLE

There's a baby in my hand
A baby in my hand
Undermined and under planned

There are doors leading low
Doors for where you want to go
Say, how high can this man go
Let's burn him, real slow

So you cross yourself in hope
Cross yourself in hope
That you are right and he's right there with you
Riding like a big wheel turning
Riding like you're going to fly
No more hands, no more yearning

You're going to a firehole
You're going to burn in hell
You're going to a firehole, firehole, firehole

There are no flies on me
Yeah, there's nothing contaminated here
There's no reason to doubt
It could ever rescue me

You are innocent, of course
Seven wives, seven divorces
Sometimes the world takes its course
In ways you don't want to go
You better let it wash all over you
You better let it wash all over you

We're going to a firehole
We're going to burn in hell
We're going to a firehole, firehole

Sturdy like your stomach's still turning
Sturdy like you're going to fly
No more hands, no more yearning

Well god bless your family
And god bless all of your friends
You can't do it without them anyway
Even when you're as hard as nails
Even when you're tougher than tough
Even when you've had enough
When the going gets rough

We're going to a firehole, firehole
We're going to burn in hell
We're going to a firehole, firehole, firehole

CRY LIKE A WHALE

If I could claw back this morning
And wind back the clock
All my high ideals, they're nothing
When you're heart's just stopped

I was stupid and a fool
And ran right off the rails with you
Now this world it is threatening
To blow through my chest

I tried to kill you with words
I now totally regret
And it felt like breaking every bone in my body
And I didn't mean any of it

Now you can hold back the sun
And let the rain fall down on me
All those broken roads in my mind
Well they just won't set me free

You were the life and soul of everything
That I hold so dear
But to cry like a whale
Is never going to bring you here

I tried to kill you with words
I now totally regret
And it felt like breaking every bone in my body
And I didn't mean any of it

Yeah, I'm crying, crying for you
But to cry like a whale
Is all that I'm going to do

I see the scars heal on my body
But now I've cracked up my mind
And these empty rooms they still hold you
Like I want to do so dear
Yeah, these empty rooms still hold you
Like I want to do so dear

3 DAYS MISSING

You used to go out with one of my friends
So what do you want me to do about it?
You went out with him, now you are some kind of friend
And you are asking me if I care about you
Well it doesn't really matter to me
But it sure does to him
He's been going home early lately

There were things we used to talk about
You could say we were playing rough
It was all about good football and money
And how many down and if we've ever had enough
But he barely speaks at all now
Somewhere the fire burnt out
And he doesn't want you at all, I've heard
Although he's not acting like it now

So don't come around here talking to me
I don't want your kiss on my cheek
If it suddenly means that much to you today
There must be three days missing in this week

It was something of a firey home I know
I wouldn't have had it any other way
I was wrong on so many things, I know that too
But you could hardly say I was pushing you away
Whatever my excuses are for now
I didn't think you'd split with my friend, on any day
Well my pride's been missing you since
But my heart's well on the way

So don't come around here talking to me
I don't want your kiss on my cheek
If it suddenly means that much to you today
There must be three days missing in this week

So you think you can just come over and talk to me
And everything will work out fine
Well you can stuff just being friends from here on in
To tell you the truth, I just haven't got the time
Yeah, Friday came like a thunderbolt
But by Monday I was back in line and off the wall
I tell you time is on my side girl
Because one day you'll wake up and regret it all

So don't come around here talking to me
I don't want your kiss on my cheek
If it suddenly means that much to you today
There must be three days missing in this week

MIRANDA

Took a gun away from his head
Wandered back to the river again
The stoop it rose and there he sat
And watched her bathing in the sun

The crisp, dark water made her legs turn red
Above her crawled the sky
Fed the dark and through he saw her and he called

He called Miranda
Won't you walk with me until tomorrow comes
And we will drown in the depth of our love, like a cage around a dove
Oh Miranda
Don't speak or sigh or ever question why

As his father had always said
Stand tall, take what you deserve
Let go of the butterfly or it will die in the jar

The vision was late, but the vision came
Through the dark, well he knew her name
Where the water flowed across her legs
And he was taken from afar

He cried Miranda
Won't you walk with me until the morning comes
And we'll drown in the depth of our love, like a cage around a dove
Oh, Miranda
Don't speak or sigh or ever question why

Oh, she came running up the hill
Oh, they stood there like lovers sometimes will
He said, 'Tell me all about it'
I've got a light for you if you can only follow
A light for you if you can only follow

Well the dove in my hand, well it must fly
It may be dark but we'll hear the cry
It's a sign of strength, it's the reason why
We must all become as one

It's not an easy road, but we must climb
Through the river deep, across the pale blue sky
We can walk together on the long road
With our arms all held as one

He cried Miranda
Won't you walk with me until the morning comes
And we down in the depth of our love, like a cage around a dove
Oh Miranda
Don't speak or sigh or ever question why

TAKE IT ALL

Take you cellophane wrapped bicycle
And your subscription to Time
And all the wasted words and jealousy
And all this white wine
And your relatives that talk too much
And that clock that doesn't chime
My big sucker wardrobe, your boots of Italian leather

And take it all, take it all
Take it all, take it all
Take it all, and put it there with mine

And your three buried children
And that horse the wouldn't run
From the photographs you took last week
That kept me until dawn
And your leather wallet and handkerchief
And that time you couldn't come
I'm like a glass bird on the mantle piece frozen here for ever
Take the flowers of romance
We'll dance in double time
And take it all, and put it there with mine

From the shutters of Paris
To the boats on the Rhine
With the blessing of our family
Yeah, I'm sure
In the catacombs and shoe shops
But you and I knew better
There was nothing I didn't understand
It wasn't a complicated letter

Now take it all, take it all
Take it all, take it all
Take it all, and put it there with mine
Take it all, take it all
Take it all, take it all
Take it all, and put it there with mine

LIGHT

Never felt a hand on my shoulder
Or took longer than a second to think about it
Drinking long, but don't realise
Can't see why no one really sees you
When they look into my eyes
No, see me falling

Cast an eye down your fine leg darling
Feel the weight of the world in your palm
So where to now? We've been there before
Bored and helpless, won't you please show me the door
Home, until the morning

And I'm reading from the bottom, don't wish it upon anyone
Me and you with our hands held to the sun
Where it's so light
So light

Didn't see you walk in tonight
And I certainly didn't feel no worse for it
Yeah, you won't lie, you won't cry
Head out dancing and forget it all tomorrow
No, that's well beneath you

And I'm reading from the bottom, don't wish it upon anyone
Me and you with our hands held to the sun
Where it's so light
So light

THE GIRL WHO LAUGHED TOO MUCH

DOING FINE

Dear Mother, I'm glad you wrote
Everything's fine but not fine enough to vote
Ah Mum, it's such a breeze
Are you really sure you want me there, no?

And we're getting on fine enough
As fine as I can see
Dancing to a steel guitar
Not loud enough for me
While I come down, down, down, down, down, down down

Ah Dad, where've you been?
It doesn't seem quite the same since you've been dropping in
Get so drunk, drunk and mellow
Tell you I'm about two foot taller now

Plain Jane, it's still the same
Nothing changes in an empty room, no
Well I thought, you might get lost
And I didn't count on you, I didn't count on you

Ah Mick, so your hair grows long
Keep buying the tickets boy
One day, me and you
Out on the town like we used to do
And that's fine by me if that's fine by you

BABY'S GOT NEW CLOTHES

In the deep and darkest lake
All animals and mud
Crushed tightly together, ah ha
And I'm dressed like a swan
Star to my chest
First in best dressed
On our way, here forever
You don't know me when you're a babe, no

See we're looking so sweet
Feeling just fine
We don't see each other cos we haven't got the time, anyway
Say a word to Deek
He's been sick three times this week
Love him like a brother and another like a queen
We know where we're going but not where we've been
Forever young and never waiting on ya

Baby's got new clothes
I don't suppose I know it
Baby's got new clothes
She's been through those and don't she show it
With a wish upon us all

Well you'll be asking me why
I'll believe it's good
We've lost our heads somewhere, I don't know if we'll ever find 'em
Sucking on your neck, is this really in the plan?
Walking with our bags to the exit, mmm
Yeah, seems real fun going searching for the moon
Middle of the morning I can hear the asses braying

Well you'd like to see
How backward I can be
When I'm a going forward
We're going to live
In a house under the sea
If we just do it now

NOT THE FINAL WORLD

You sat there with a life across your face
I can see your mouth but I know you have no taste
We were counting through the years
And a hundred thousand tears
Singing, this is not the final world
This is not the final world
This is not the final world

Marked, with a hand held so high
Marked like a dark cloud in a beautiful sky
Now we're waiting for the hour
In a dark and dirty tower
Whispering this is not the final world
This is not the final world
This is not the final world

I judged you, like I judge a favourite book
You know I loved you, as much as I ever really could
We were sitting hand in hand
With all our future planned
Singing, this is not the final world
This is not the final world
This is not the final world

Dark as we near the end of the day
Sleep little baby your Daddy's on his way
And I'll still hold you in your dreams
When your world is not what is seems
You see this is not the final world
This is not the final world
This is not the final world

Sleep little baby, do not cry
It was not so bad, I loved our lullaby
And when you feel insecure
And you really can't take any more
Remember, this is not the final world
This is not the final world
This is not the final world
This is not the final world

HANGING ROCK

Misty mountain and we're going far
Sabre-tooth tiger line, driving in your car
The wind blows dust through our hair
Never seen you looking better than when we got there
Ah ha, la la la la la la, taking our picnic on the rock
Ah ha, la la la la la la, love to love you when it's hot

Taking host, like a fine grey ghost
See a lake, a beautiful lake sat out there
Close and warm, nearly home
Bring out the blanket, cakes and tea for free
You and me
Ah ha, la la la la la la, taking our picnic on the rock
Ah ha, la la la la la la, love to love you when it's hot

Well you say, you say, you say, you say you say
What a beautiful day
I will, no way
What a beautiful day
What a beautiful way

It's late afternoon, half past four
Start climbing down, oh so gently
Picnic time, once again
Write out in stone, yeah l. o. v. e.
Ah ha, la la la la la la, taking our picnic on the rock
Ah ha, la la la la la la, love to love you when it's hot

Well the sun in our eyes, chopper into view
Buttercup, dandelion, lavender for your room
Your eyes, in view
Write out a message, only me and you
I want to, you want to, I want to, can we do it too
Yeah, me and you

COLUMBUS RETURNS

I'm home, I'm home
I know I left a stupid mess
But I've now lived the lives of twenty
I know this is where I want to stay
Can't say much about the rest
So what you been doing while I've been away?

You're back, you're back
Well that's all I want to say
It's changed from being a love to a boredom
If you think I'll try
You're wasting your time on me

You see my love don't come that easy
Don't shed a tear, shed a tear, shed a tear for me

I didn't expect you'd forgive me, forgive me straight away
After all you say you didn't get my letter
I've been fighting a fire with my paper and my clay
Look at my hand, see how they're burning

I don't care where you've been, or where you stood your ground
I've shed my skin for you, and I don't care what you've found
What did you do out there, that you couldn't do with me?
I've told all our friends, my love don't come that easy
I've told all our friends, what was will never now be

But I carved your name, on a hundred different trees
Believed I was looking at the same moon as ya
I swam in the water, so dark, deep and free
Look at my blood, it's light and it's flowing

Go back, go back, I've had your tearful eyes
I've been living too long in the house of yearning
You got what you wanted, now you've gone and lost the rest

Seems like you're trying to hang it on me
Well sorry now honey, this last bit's for free
Don't shed a tear, shed a tear, shed a tear for me
Don't shed a tear, shed a tear, shed a tear for me

IF YOU WERE TO GO

Your dark mood, hair in your face
Evil grin, cut your eye
Dressed up in lace
Walked a crooked mile beside you
Along a river of blood
I would wash my hands tomorrow
If I thought that I could

I would die, if you were to go
I would hold my head and fall so low
I would lay down, fade away
I will love you till the end of the day

In your arms, a bitter love
Somewhere between a town painted red and the blue sky above
Watch you on a mountain, I've watched you fall
Then you cover it so softly, until you've taken it all

Seven ninety nine and a million miles to go
You said that I was strange to believe, and now I know
Black dirt and honour crushed a delicate skull
We ran right to the top to find out
We were still down below

THE GIRL WHO LAUGHED TOO MUCH

She said I needed an angel
Someone to look over me
Better make it a pretty one
With all knowledge of the sea
There was Tricia, there was Jane, and Carol, and Marie
And the girl who laughed too much

Well I took out a boat just before nightfall
Surprised how still things seemed to be
Pictures of death shimmered everywhere
And most of them, they included me
With Jennifer, and Angela, Louise and Marlene
But not the girl who laughed too much

Well the boat it kept on rolling
Rolling out to sea
Salt water, for cargo
A present from her to me
Oh eh oh, oh

Well I awoke still drunk in the morning
Green eyed, wet lipped, maybe a little thin
Submerged like a dwarf in long grass
A rope around my neck, I believe I was choking
I thought of Christine, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Mary, Ruth, and finally me
With the girl who laughed too much

Well the boat it kept on rolling
Rolling out to sea
Salt water, for cargo
A present from her to me
Oh eh oh, oh

See the house on a hill with a garden
Presents beneath the Christmas tree
A circle in the blue carpet burning
A book on the floor, that belongs to me
With numbers for Cathy, Majella, Tessa, Loretta, Maud, Joan and their sisters three
But not the girl who laughed too much

MINNIE PEARL

On the first day I got a hold, my skin was white and young
Took a bag from my father's room, took the shirt he'd had on
I strode into the morning sun, the wind bit my face
Heading towards a chapel town and the Pearl family place
But the doors they were locked, they kept themselves inside

The next day, I came around, screaming in my head
She'd been gone for over a year, or at least that's what her mother said
I tried to piece together where she'd been and if she'd lost
Her delicate face, perfect skin, wide eyes and the family cross
Well the church door it stood open, but I had other things on my mind

My girl
Someone's going to pay for my girl

Her mother she told a story, of a fight in a bar
Apparently in my absence, well she'd spread herself afar
I could feel my flower wilting, and an ache grew inside
I aged about twenty years, and my fists grew strong and wild
And I left a bloody mess there, drove a car through the door

But then by chance I stumbled on her, Minnie Pearl on a beach
She was sat a bathed in gold, and her hair a silver bleach
The shotgun in my hand, felt about three times its size
But I thought about what I'd heard, and put the shotgun to my eye
I aimed at her St Christopher, but I saw me and smiled, and smiled, and smiled, and smiled

Well I walked a little closer, using my gun as a crook
She said 'You're not looking all that well'
I said 'It's not about the way I look
But how come my face is withered, and you, you look so fine?'
'Quite a few things have passed,' she said, putting her hand into mine
'And you, you're wearing different things, and you don't seem to mind'

But I'm still in a single bed and there's nothing left to be done
She decided she could walk away, and well me, I've been drinking some
All the years I'd planned, they slipped through my palm
I was turning grey, feeling old, she said I'd lost my charm
And how come I weep so much and there's revenge on my mind

My girl
Someone's going to pay for my girl
My girl, my girl

One the last day she came back I was there on my stool
I could barely string two words together, dealt my hand across the room
She'd found a young gypsy boy, with the air on his mind
Travelling from town to town, it suited her just fine
And her face was still delicate, still delicate, so delicate, so delicate and fine

SHINE

Like a hornet in my head
Hear you whisper all the time
From tramp city baby to the end of the street
Shards in my hands, you rest your feet

Put my finger to your lips
There'll be no more talk for now
The baby crawls to you
The sun comes shining through
Don't fall so low

Earth move out my way
Dirty water for a spine
The diamonds in my mind
They shine, shine, shine

Everywhere I turn to fly
A piano on the call
The click, clack, click, clack
Of rain on your window

New mother takes you in
You've left your bags in the hall
The castles you were building now seem
Like nothing at all
Let it shine, shine, shine
Let it shine, shine, shine

And you want to set you free
But you want to make that call
You've been from here to everywhere
But it's still nowhere at all

You're moving like a train
Got no place to fall
There's a moon we're chasing from dusk
To the bright side of dawn

You've got nowhere to go
Hanging on my arm
The lights like company
A lull before a storm

You're leaving for a friend
You're not sure if you'll go
But come tomorrow morning
Well you think you'll know
Let it shine, shine, shine
Let it shine, shine, shine

PARK LANE

I can feel your hand girl
I'm howling at the moon
He said he was going to be here
He said he was a coming soon
But I can no longer fight it
There's little more I can do
Your long hair flowing
Up above the avenue

Doesn't it seem a little strange girl
And the air so sweet
Go searching for a perfect night
Go running off our feet
A glass in every empty bar
Well I lie where you've been
Your long hair flowing
Soft and gentle on your skin

From coast to colosseum
From park to Park Lane
In the face of every passing girl
In the rumble of a train
From the tip of the highest tower
Every path to your door
And your long hair flowing
And your ribbons on the floor

Well I turn to go away now
A last kiss on your cheek
Strange how time seemed to fly
How a day became a week
A million roads to travel down
And time to forget
Your long hair flowing
I remember you yet

From coast to colosseum
From park to Park Lane
In the face of every passing girl
In the rumble of a train
From the tip of the highest tower
Every path to your door
And your long hair flowing
And your ribbons on the floor
And your long hair flowing
And your ribbons on the floor

ABOUT A GIRL

Let me tell you about a girl
She's tall, tall, tall
She sleeps with me
While I creep and crawl
My head on fire
My hand on fire

Want to tell you about a girl
She's so out there spinning
She's spinning along the rails and through all of my rigging
Never out of pretty
And I'm all lies, lies, lies

Let me tell you about a girl
Her name was Louise
Or was it Alison, or Janice, or Marlene
I don't remember it now
It never really mattered

And her coat flowed like a river of dreams
I followed her on bended knee
Beyond the grave
Beyond the horizon
All because

Let me tell you about a girl
She's inside and out
And she comes to me
With a scream and a shout
And she'll fight, fight, fight
She'll fight, fight, fight

OH, PITY ME

Oh, pity me
Oh, pity me
There's no picture of you on my tree
There's a loose cannon pointed at me
Oh, pity me
Oh, pity me

So how about you
How about you
When your coffee and cigarettes won't do
You're totally beautiful, oh you
Don't know what yet I want to do

Well we can talk all night
Do what's right
Send our love to the world
Entwined in a fire
Burning higher and higher
Among the tender and torn
All naked and warm

If it comes together
We'll talk about a rainbow
With a pot of gold
Somewhere back at home
If it comes together
In a field of wild horses
I'm not leaving until we've taken them all

I'll bring you a scent of a rose
In a box of a heart
I'll drive when you're too tired to steer
I'll sing at your door
Call when you want more
And we'll dance among the reeds
And all that that means

Oh, pity us
I don't see why
Taking love from a lover's eye
I don't need a doctor to try
Loving you, oh how about you?
Loving you, oh how about you?
Loving you, oh how about you?
